Ode To The ICNY

By Katherine Mondragon (Colombia)

This is a lovely place that raises our spirits; that creates events and activities that help us gain confidence in ourselves; a beautiful place that encourages us to strive to achieve our goals, and make our dreams possible.

This is where we all enjoy having fun getting the right pronunciation with Joe Lamb; improving our vocabulary by reading a book with Shawn Mullin; or getting good advice about working in the USA from David Ross. This place is made up of a wonderful staff that is always ready to give us a hand in everything we need in the best way they can;  and volunteers who are willing to share all their wisdom and patience to help us improve our English skills. It is a place made up of members who come from all parts of the world.

This place presents to us an opportunity to share and explain our traditions and culture; to deeper discover ourselves; to think of new ideas; and even demonstrate our artistic talents. This place gives us the great experience of being in a mini version of New York City. Here we meet many different people from different countries and they become our friends. They give us support, love, and care.

For all this, the ICNY represents for us our second home. The International Center is more than just a place to learn English. It is a place where we have formed one big family – it is a home away from home.

  1. Wow, what a great speech you wrote! I totally agree with you, Katherine. When I was reading this post, I felt encouraged and proud of being here. As you said, they give us support, love and care. It’s really home away from home. Take care and best of luck in all your future endeavors.

  2. Katherine, I am so happy that you enjoy being at the Center. I am a conversation partner volunteer and really enjoy seeing the members talking and having a good time! All the best to you in New York.
